Macramé Hanging

20/11/2025

I had wall space to fill but didn't want more paintings or posters. The room needed a new texture and I liked the idea of thread art. I searched for macramé pieces with the right colours and patterns but couldn't stomach their prices.

So I figured: why not try it myself?

The dimensions and aspect ratio were eyeballed by holding a tape measure to the wall. Cotton threads were cut to length and laid together so I could outline the shape and colour boundaries with a fabric pen. Each thread was presoaked in water, gripped with tweezers and dipped in Dylon Jeans Blue. They were carefully folded to dye the edges with Dylon Ocean Blue before laying to dry overnight. The process took around 3 hours and the colours (thankfully) dried a different shade.

Despite their best efforts to twist and coil, the dried threads were realigned into the original pattern. We bravely committed to cutting a straight edge along the top and, after initial gluing failed, it was decided to sandwich the dyed threads between two dowels and roll them over once for added security.
